It’s been a busy year for the Tyk team – we’ve hosted or attended over 15 community events all around the world: from the Americas to Australia! But we couldn’t wind down for Christmas without one final community event: API Days Paris.
As well as spreading Tyk truths (and treats) via our conference stand, the team held a bunch of workshops across the 2 days, and even popped up as a special guest in the French Ministry of Agriculture’s talk.
Here’s a round-up of what we got up to across the conference.

Tyk at API Days 2018
December 11: Taming your Monoliths & Microservices with API Management (Workshop)
In this 50 minute workshop Ahmet Soormally, Tyk Consulting Engineer, took attendees through some of the most common API challenges we come across, and explained how an API Gateway and Management Platform like Tyk can solve them.
Ahmet kicked things off with a general overview of API Management and why it adds value to your API set-up. He then helped explain the bigger picture by covering common requirements like versioning, policies, API keys and publishing your APIs as a product to the outside world, or even to internal teams within the organisation via a developer portal.
It’s not all talk and no action though – he then switched into a Tyk deep-dive into how to configure your gateway to work harder for you, showing you ways you can use Tyk to quickly and easily manipulate API calls for your needs.
From body transformation for those legacy XML/SOAP backends, virtual endpoints (lambda style), JSON Schema Validation, through to URL rewrites and more, Ahmet’s workshop left users confident enough to get the same results from their own API project.
Missed the workshop? You can take a look at Ahmet’s slides, or watch a similar Tyk demo that Ahmet performed at Nordic APIs Platform Summit 2018 (via YouTube).
December 12: Securing your Microservices with an API Management Platform (Workshop)
From the Cambridge Analytica scandal to Uber’s $148m breach, data security continues to be a hot topic around the world, and inside organisations just like yours.
APIs are in no way immune to these concerns. If you’re feeling unsure about the security implications of exposing your own services and systems to the world, then let us tell you now: you’re not alone, and we’re here to help.
With this in mind, Yaara Letz, Tyk Consulting Engineer, used this workshop to explain how API management and identity management can work together to secure your API programme.
In the first part Yaara demonstrated the different methods for microservices authentication and authorisation, and illustrated how an API gateway fits into this. As well as taking users through some sample architectures, she also explained the pros and cons of different auth methods.
In the second part of the workshop, Yaara then explained why it’s good practice to use a separate Identity Provider (IdP) with your API Management. She finished with walkthroughs of 2 ways to secure an api with Tyk using a 3rd party IdP (OpenID Connect and generic JWT), and, finally, how to sign onto Tyk’s UIs using a 3rd party IdP.

Tyk et the Ministère de l’Agriculture at API Days
Tyk’s proud to support Ministère de l’Agriculture et de l’Alimentation‘s ambitious and ongoing API Programme, so we nabbed front row seats for their talk at API Days Paris 2018.
As well as giving a sneak peek at their Ministry’s transformation project, Sylvain Perrinel and Frédéric Bronnert treated the API Community to an up-close-and-personal look at their deployment lifecycle.
It’s not the first time Ministère de l’Agriculture et de l’Alimentation have given back to the API Community either. They won a 2018 Tyk Award for translating our free Dashboard into French.
And just like that…. API Days was over
We had a great time meeting you all, sharing our API expertise & tackling your multi-DC queries over two days of API goodness!
A big merci beaucoup to everyone who stopped by to say hello. It was great to meet you and learn more about your projects. We hope you made it to one of our Tyk workshops too!
Finally, huge thanks also go to APIDays Conferences for putting on a fantastic event, and of course to our merry band of Tyks who travelled from near and far to be there.
It’s only right that they celebrated such a successful trip with a nice bottle of red afterwards (French, naturellement!)
Where are we off to in 2019?
As the great, late, David Bowie once said: ‘I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring’.
