The problem
Farm Bureau Insurance of Idaho needed an on-premise, self-managed API management solution. It didn’t want to add another SaaS subscription to its already long list, with all the associated costs that increase with growth. Instead, it was seeking a solution that would provide robust security and privacy, so that network traffic wasn’t routed through cloud providers, and didn’t become a moving part with external liability. Only an on-premise, self-managed platform would suffice.
At the same time as security and privacy, the business needed a solution that would deliver high availability and reliable performance. Without this, it would be left fighting performance issues, with unscalable systems and a poor internal user experience.
The solution needed to expose more than 80 enterprise APIs to and from various applications, benefiting around 300 in-house users, delivering unified access management, and connecting Guidewire systems, internal microservices, and customer-facing mobile apps.
In addition to Guidewire users, API consumers at Farm Bureau Insurance of Idaho included internal development teams and around 2,000 customers via mobile apps. The company needed to meet the needs of all these users with a secure solution that would support high availability and scalability.

The role of Tyk
Farm Bureau Insurance of Idaho is using a two-node Tyk Self-Managed license to bring enhanced governance and improved performance to its microservices environment. Tyk is used to manage approximately 80 active APIs, including both internal and external APIs. Peak API traffic rates are eight million requests per month in production and 12 million in development.
Access is highly restricted and tightly controlled, as befits a regulated environment. Just five members have access to the developer portal, while registered users include 35 development applications and 28 production applications.

Farm Bureau Insurance of Idaho is now using Tyk for unified API routing and traffic centralization, with Tyk delivering time savings on routing setup and centralized control, along with improved developer productivity.
