Key features used
SmarTone is a leading Hong Kong mobile communications provider, offering territory-wide 5G services. An instrumental driver of the region’s 5G, digital transformation, and smart city development, SmarTone was the first company in Hong Kong to introduce 5G home broadband services.
SmarTone is using Tyk as a unified access point for all its internal systems, enabling seamless data exchange through APIs. Tyk API Gateway is now underpinning universal API management at SmarTone, enabling the business to achieve consistent performance and governance while managing the entire API lifecycle efficiently.
The problem
With around 100 internal and external APIs, and a peak traffic rate of 400 TPS, SmarTone needed a robust API management platform solution. Without one, the firm would have faced difficulties in managing and securing APIs, leading to operational inefficiencies, with the increased manual effort of handling API-related tasks reducing overall productivity.
The role of Tyk
SmarTone is using Tyk’s API management solution to provide a standard, unified access point for all its internal systems. Tyk supports the entire API lifecycle, from creation to retirement, with features for design, implementation, and monitoring.
With 13 Tyk Gateways and a total of 46 virtual machines used across its production, stating, development, and disaster recovery environments, SmarTone is using Tyk to benefit its platform teams, developers, and end users. In addition to Tyk API Gateway, the company is using Tyk Dashboard, Tyk Pump and Tyk’s Enterprise Development Portal. It has also installed Tyk Sync for API imports and exports.
The resolution
Choosing Tyk has delivered the ease of use, manageability, and governance that are crucial to SmarTone’s operational efficiency and productivity.
By providing the flexibility and performance that SmarTone needed, along with an intuitive platform designed to deliver a superior developer experience, Tyk has slotted beautifully into the mobile firm’s microservices architecture. SmarTone is now benefitting not only from Tyk’s superb array of features, but also from its exceptional customer support.
“Their flexibility, strong support, and clear product vision gave me confidence that Tyk was the right choice.”
– Philip Wong, Principal Architect, SmarTone
The future
SmarTone has ambitious plans, and Tyk will be there every step of the way. The next milestone is for SmarTone to scale its API platform across multiple teams while maintaining consistent governance and performance.
“Tyk’s decentralized architecture and policy-driven controls make it ideal for this. We’re also looking to enhance developer onboarding and observability, and Tyk’s portal and analytics features will be key enablers.”
