There’s no better time than B Corp Month to share an exciting milestone that we’ve been working toward for a long time. This March, as the global community celebrates businesses that balance profit with purpose, we’re incredibly proud to announce that Tyk is officially a Certified B Corp!
In the tech world, “growth at all costs” is the default setting for most. But since Martin and James founded Tyk in 2014, we’ve been proving you can build a global, profitable infrastructure company without losing your soul (or your sense of humor).
Becoming a B Corp isn’t just a badge; it’s a formal recognition that we’re meeting high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.
Purpose over hype: Why B Corp?
Tyk started as a side project that wasn’t about hitting a valuation target – it was about building a better API gateway. As we grew to a team of nearly 100 people, that “better” evolved to include how we treat our people and our planet.
The B Corp movement aligns perfectly with Tyk’s approach. We care about:
- Our people: From our remote-first culture (which existed long before it was “cool”) to supporting a diverse, global team spanning 30+ countries.
- Our community: Including our commitment to the open-source ecosystem and ensuring our growth benefits the developers who rely on us. (The latest example is Tyk AI Studio going open source, which you can read about here.)
- Our governance: Hard-coding accountability into our legal DNA to ensure we consider people and the planet alongside profit.
The rigor behind the label
The journey to certification was rigorous (as anyone who has tackled a B Impact Assessment knows). It forced us to look under the hood of our own operations with the same scrutiny we apply to a high-traffic API cluster.
It was a process we were passionate about completing, as our CEO Martin summed up:
“We wanted to show that a tech company could scale globally while remaining a force for good. Becoming a B Corp feels like validation that we’ve been building the right way all along. In an industry that often rewards speed over care, we believe resilience comes from responsibility.”
What will change?
Your API management won’t suddenly start running on organic kale. We’re still the same “dreamers with a dose of cynicism” focused on building the fastest, most flexible API gateway on the market.
What has changed is our legal commitment. We’ve updated our Articles of Association to formally include our impact on all stakeholders. This means that honesty is embedded into our legal framework, which feels more important than ever as we tackle the challenges of the AI era and the next generation of digital infrastructure.
This is just the beginning
Sharing this during B Corp Month feels right, but this isn’t a one-month commitment. The “B” stands for “Benefit for all,” and we’re committed to making sure that as Tyk grows, so does our positive impact on the developers, partners, and communities we serve.
To everyone who has been part of our journey so far – our users, our clients, and our fellow Tyklings – thank you for helping us prove that a global tech business can indeed be a force for good.
