The API product management newsletter | #019 | 20 February 2024

Welcome to the latest edition of the API product management newsletter, dedicated to helping product teams drive more business value from their APIs and API products.

This week: We’re focused on growing the collective understanding of API product management this week. We dive into three different takes on why it’s essential, what the difficulties are and how we can move the needle when it comes to obtaining understanding and buy-in.

But first, a reminder! We only include:

  • The top 3 most useful resources we’ve come across the two weeks prior. Any more than that, and we find our browser tabs become unmanageable
  • What we find personally useful – and digestible – as product and product marketing managers
  • Educational content (whether an article, whitepaper or event). No product pitches – that includes yours truly.

💡The good stuff: This week’s API product management links:

“If API Management is the answer, could API Experience be the question?” – Emma Kriskinans

Excuse me for kicking off this week’s articles with something written by yours truly, but after almost a year of running this newsletter I felt like it was time for a bit of a rant. If you’re part of this community, then you probably already agree that APIs are the lifeblood of pretty much every organisation, and touch almost every team’s objectives. So why is it that there is still such a widespread lack of understanding of API management – both for API products and API platforms? What can we do to fix this? And could the term ‘API experience’ help us connect better with others on this topic? I’d love to know what you think on this – is this a term that could better stick with our stakeholders? And keep an eye out for a shout-out about this very community of API PM pioneers!

“No one ever said considering APIs as digital products or services was easy” – Clément Karimpour

Why do so many business leaders think that ‘API as a product’ simply means building an API and sticking a price tag on it? Clément Karimpour, Enterprise CSM at Postman, sets the record straight in this excellent post. From adopting a product mindset and applying that methodology to the entire development lifecycle, to exploring untapped markets, take this whistle-stop tour of the difficulties of productisation.

“In 2024, a key challenge will be securing ‘tech buy-in’” – Joyce Stack

API champion Joyce Stack shares her thoughts on the value of employee communities within organisations and the key role they will play in securing ‘tech buy-in’ over the year ahead. While CEOs fret about economic uncertainty, global unrest, climate disasters and more, champions and communities can help take boardroom strategies and turn them into reality. Joyce reveals how.
