Six years ago, Tyk was just the pipe dream of a frustrated engineer (now our CEO, Martin). All he wanted was a performant, cheap, open source API gateway, but he couldn’t find what he was looking for. So he went ahead and started to build his own.
It’s how a lot of companies start. You can’t find the thing you want or need so you make it yourself. At some point you find yourself with a fully-fledged company, ordering coffee capsules and biros – but until then it’s a self-generated, self-motivated side project.
And pushing a side project forward comes with all sorts of challenges. It can be a lonely business; it can be hard to get feedback; and more than anything it can be hard to afford the essentials that you need to make a good idea a reality.
Introducing the Tyk Side Project Fund
We believe in the restless energy of engineers and techies – we think it’ll produce cool products, improvements to existing ones, useful plug-ins and hacks… and putting open data to good use, this kind of energy might even change the world.
We rely on our amazing community to make Tyk better for everyone. When we employ people, we look for people to love to tinker and improve things without needing to be asked. Tyk itself was a side project originally!
This got us thinking. Maybe we should put our money where our mouth is, and give a hand to people who share our attitude. We asked around, and everyone at Tyk agreed.
So we’ve launched a micro-grant fund for people doing cool things in our world. It could be a product, a service, a platform, an event… as long as it fits our application criteria, we’d love to hear from you.
We’re not handing out cash (sorry) but, as-and-when we get an application that impresses us, we’ll pay for something that’s needed to move a project forward. It could be training, software, hosting, a venue – anything that is going to make a tangible impact, and to a maximum value of £500 so we can help as many side projects as possible.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for side projects that have been created out of sheer passion – with a splash of bloody-mindedness and determination. But most importantly, we want to support side projects that seek to make a positive impact on the world through connection, openness and transparency – whether that’s with people, data, services, or something else.
Your project may revolve around APIs and API Management (that’s kind of our thing) but we’re keen to hear from the broader engineer, microservices and tech community too. You might be developing a platform, connecting some systems in a new way, using open data to do something cool, or even running an event or hackathon.
If this sounds like you, we’re running application windows from February to March, and then again in October to November, to help support the community to grow as we did.
Spread the word and, if you’re interested yourself, apply in under 5 minutes, via our Side Project Fund page. Good luck!
